Background:
Strategies for Success focuses on Executive Functioning Skills and how they relate to in-class behavior and studying. This class will be targeted primarily towards students with an SLD or ADHD-like profile with minor, externalizing behaviors. We will focus on study habits, organization skills, executive functioning skills, and will have structured time built into each period for students to work on assignments for their other classes.
Throughout the school year, we will be learning about the different executive functioning skills, figure out skill areas that need improvement, work to improve performance in those skill areas, as well as learn how each of these skills can affect performance in and out of the classroom. This year, the district purchased a curriculum for us to pilot called "Unstuck & On Target" which is focused on honing planning skills, cognitive flexibility, and organization skills.
In addition to Executive Functioning skills, we will also be working on social skill development and social emotional learning. This can help to increase the likelihood of success for each student as they navigate the social landscape of their lives in and out of school, appropriately handling frustrations as they come. This year we will also be piloting a new evidence-based SEL curriculum purchased for the department called "MindUP" that incorporates aspects of neuroscience, mindful awareness, social-emotional learning, and positive psychology.
